welcome to
panyanivej organic farm & ceramics studio!

Panyanivej organic farm was founded by PADETC (a non-profit, Lao organization) in 2008 to promote and showcase organic farming using appropriate technologies. In 2014, Panyanivej became an independent social enterprise working to promote sustainable agriculture among farmers, students, tourists and general public.

panyanivej organic farm

The farm was christened “Panyanivej” from the two Lao words. “Panya” (“wisdom”) and “Nivej” (“ecology”) – to reflect our aspiration to exercise wisdom in nurturing a healthy ecology in which human and nature co-exist harmoniously. We believe in an “integrated farming” system that promotes interdependence among plant and animal life in a balanced ecosystem.

panyanivej ceramics studio

Laos has a rich history of producing low-temperature, unglazed ceramics, with earthenware being the most common type. However, traditional methods for producing vitreous and glazed tableware are not feasible in Laos. Panya.Nivej Ceramics studio aims to preserve traditional earthenware craftsmanship, integrate contemporary designs for everyday use, and create employment opportunities for young people in Laos.

The studio was established in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. All five potters are young farmers from Panya.Nivej who have been well-trained by an expert potter, Mr. Thomas Unzicker, for over two years. It is now a space for them to create art pieces using clay from the farm, in addition to their work in the organic garden. Tourists and locals are welcome to explore it as a showroom and an open workshop to try on activities. An open-air and organic farm brings peaceful vibes.

Jit Phankham, director

Jit is passionate about enhancing the quality of life for young adults in Laos and commited to enhancing the agricultural system in Laos. She collaborate with agricultural and ceramic-making experts, and organizations to introduce innovative and sustainable agricultural and ceramic-making practices.

Kitar Philar Vanh

Kitar is the manager of Panyanivej ceramic studio. Agriculture is her source of income, allowing her to send money home to her family. The agricultural process at Panyanivej emphasizes problem-solving, which helps her improve her problem-solving skills. She is also able to hone her customer service skills when conducting workshops at the ceramics studio. Ceramics can be challenging in that the finished product might not look as well as it does, but she believes that practice makes perfect and that stopping means having to start again from scratch.

Sing Thenlisone

At Panyanivej, Sing gets to carry on from his village and early life by working in agriculture, which makes him happy. He acknowledges that making ceramics demands an extensive amount of concentration. Notwithstanding its flaws, he takes pride in his work.

Souli Sivilay

For Souli, agriculture is not an unfamiliar topic. Her substantial knowledge and abilities from her educational background are reinforced by real-world experience and on-the-job training. While school is mostly focused on theoretical and technical knowledge, she gains practical experience on the farm. At Panyanivej, she is able to problem-solve and address challenges that arise such as issues related to pests and diseases. However, she is new to ceramics and am embarking on a new learning journey. Working with clay and ceramics is something she currently enjoys doing.

Anan Philar Vanh

Anan knows how to do rice fields because her family does farming for a living. At Panyanivej, she gained new knowledge about monitoring and caring for organic vegetables. She enjoys the creative process and feels good about creating ceramic pieces. This equips her with a set of skills that she may use in various professional settings.

Mali Khamphueng

Mali is a manager of Panyanivej's vegetables and rice farming. Organic farming is a field that goes beyond what students study in school. After joining Panyanivej, she gained new skills such as problem-solving, planning, and product development. Initially, ceramics was a challenge as she has never done it before and it was something new to her. Now, she takes pride in her art pieces and have never imagined that she would be able to make it to this point.
